Behind the Scenes at the Flat Rock Playhouse

Monday, June 13

As residents of Kenmure, we are blessed with having many North Carolina and national treasures in our midst.  One of those treasures is the Flat Rock Playhouse, which in 1961 was officially designated as The State Theatre of North Carolina.

What began as a dream of a group of struggling performers in 1937 who found a welcoming community in the people of western North Carolina and a permanent home in Flat Rock in the early 1950’s, has turned into an organization that hosts over 100,000 patrons annually and is a significant contributor to the local economy.   The Playhouse today has a dual mission of “producing the performing arts and providing education in the performing arts”.

Many of you have enjoyed the fabulous plays, musicals, or “music on the rock” shows over the years.  Have you ever been curious as to how all of it comes together to enable the great performances we get to enjoy as patrons of the playhouse?   If so, now is your chance to discover what happens behind the scenes!

You are invited to join with fellow Arts & Adventurers as we explore the Flat Rock Playhouse.  Our two-hour tour will be led by key principals at the playhouse.  The tour will start with a brief talk about the history of the Playhouse.  Following the discussion, the group will tour the Theater, Back Stage, Scene Shop, Sets/Costume area, Rehearsal Studio, Lowndes House, artist Housing, and Gardens.

Event Details:

  • Monday, June 13, 2022
  • Tour time: 10 AM to 12 Noon
  • Group size: 40 persons maximum, split into two groups of 20 for the tour.
  • Participants to travel on own, or via self-arranged car-pool, to the Flat Rock Playhouse campus
  • Participants should gather in front of the playhouse’s Leiman Mainstage by 9:50 AM to assure the tour can start promptly at 10 AM.

Cost:  Price for each participant is $20.  The money gathered by A&A for this event will form a donation to the Flat Rock Playhouse to further their mission.

Payment requirements:  Pre-payment is required to reserve your space.  For this payment, a check should be made out to "KNN" for $20 per person with "Flat Rock Playhouse" written on the memo line.  For couples a single check of $40 is suitable.  The check should be placed in an envelope addressed to "Debbie Burke - Flat Rock Playhouse" and left at the Kenmure Front Gate by the due date.

Participant Cancellation policy:  Cancellations must be received prior to 72 hours before the event in order to receive a refund of your payment.  Cancellations made after that deadline will not receive a refund.

Health and Safety:

Participants will need to bring and wear a mask during the back-stage portions of the tour.  This will be mandatory in compliance with theater Union Rules.

Please DO NOT register for this event if you are unable to comply with the above Health & Safety requirement.

Participation limit for this event is 40.

KNN members will be prioritized first, before the event is opened up to guests.

Once participation limits are reached, we will utilize a wait-list for the event.

You are encouraged to sign-up early.  Registration closes May 30.

Please note: Completion of the registration form is not a confirmation that you will be able to participate.  Once registered you will receive an email requesting the required pre-payment and giving the due date for pre-payment.  The pre-payment amount required must be received prior to the due date.  Once pre-payment is recorded, you will receive your event confirmation email.
